Using a symbolic language that references notions of protection, defense and boundary, this body of work engages with the liminal space that exists between the contradictory nature of these ideas. Is a wall defense or imprisonment? Does a mask conceal or protect? Literal and symbolic experiences of these contradictions and all that they represent are a primary concern of the work.
Ceramic forms of different colour, texture and scale have been produced. Most are made with a combination of a reductive and additive approach. Elements are formed by being cut and shaped with additional parts then joined or added to express further dimension or scale. These elements are often then combined or grouped together, with frames or metal backing plates, to form larger works.
Recent Works 2019 includes a series of sculptural wall reliefs, timber-framed forms and free-standing works presented on timber and steel plinths. Each sculpture is constructed using clay bodies formulated specifically for the works in this exhibition. The work has evolved through a tactile understanding of the thresholds and limits of working with the earth. The ceramic process cannot be rushed or pushed to completion and requires a willingness to engage with the quiet, grounded rhythm established by the clay.
